Doctor and Empowerment Trust team up to help the aged regain their sight

Optometrists have long encouraged older people to have their eyes tested regularly but most can not afford to do so. However, for the residents of Vosloorus Old Age Home, Kwa Thema Old Age Home and San Michelle outside help is now at hand.

Afrisun Trust, the empowerment partner of Carnival City Casino, has embarked on a project to give back sight to the aged. Over the past month, Dr Patrick Mncube visited the home to give free eye tests to the residents, who will formally receive their new glasses from 28 June.

Dr Mncube said “many visual problems can be better detected and treated with regular eye tests, and our aim with this project is to improve the quality of life for our elderly folk.”

Most of the elderly occupants of the home have had to rely on very old spectacles which no longer offer clear vision, impacting not only on joys such as reading or watching TV, but leading to unnecessary falls. A recent study in the UK has shown that poor eyesight leads to loss of confidence and many falls among older people.

According to Sandy Hattingh, CEO of Afrisun Trust, “Dr Mncube first contacted us when the Pieter Wessels home in Nigel burnt down in 2010. He offered residents eye tests and replaced the glasses they lost in the fire with new ones. In so doing, he discovered that many had not had eye tests in years, and their eyesight had deteriorated beyond the capacity of their existing glasses.”

Every four months, Dr Mncube will visit another old age home in Ekurhuleni. During each visit, Afrisun will also supply residents with refreshments and sweet treats. Only those residents who are not members of medical aids will be tested.

Carnival City and Afrisun Trust honour the season for giving with the fourth annual Christmas party for approximately 700 underprivileged children.

This year Carnival City CSI and the Afrisun Trust have jointly pledged R130 000 to bring the spirit of the season to life for youngsters aged six to 12 from orphanages in Ekurhuleni. They were treated to a day of non-stop entertainment at Carnival City on 3 December from 08h00 to 15h00.

The outdoor soccer field on the property was transformed into a fantasy ‘water world’ complete with water slide, castles and boat rides. The outdoor games and foam offered the children hours of excitement.

Other activities and attractions included face painting and the opportunity to meet and interact with visiting clowns. Throughout the day each child received fresh fruit juices and waters courtesy of service provider Headline Leisure Management (HLM), and healthy snacks followed by a nutritious lunch, ice-creams and sweets at noon, prepared by Carnival City’s catering company Fedics.

In-house clinic Ikhambi Care was on call to assist with any scrapes and cuts, and the children were to be treated to surprise visits from celebrities throughout the morning.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the much anticipated early visit from Santa and Mrs Clause, appropriately laden with gifts galore.

Apart from attracting some of the best young players from the region, there are a number of teams from neighbouring countries taking part in an event that Eastern Cricket’s director of club cricket Mark Kingham describes as “one of the cornerstones of cricket development in Southern Africa”.

Kingham emphasised that without the support of Carnival City Brakpan, Afrisun Sun East Rand Community Trust, Impala Platinum, Tempest Car Hire, ABI and the Ekurhuleni Metro Council, this “prestigious event” would not happen.

“We thank our valued and loyal sponsors for their belief in our vision,” he said.

This year is the first time in the history of the EJCCA that all three festivals are being held at the same time, with a total of 20 teams participating.

The Under-17 Festival is taking place at Benoni’s Willowmoore Park, the Under-15 Festival at United (Brakpan) and Actonville (Benoni) cricket clubs, and the Under-13 Festival at Springs Old Boys CC and Benoni Northerns.

According to Kingham, the festival has grown in status since its inception eight years ago and has become a prestigious event in South Africa, winning many accolades from Cricket SA and the Africa Cricket Association.

Apart from the various Easterns age-group teams from u-12 through to u-17 competing, national junior teams from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Botswana are also taking part.

“The Eastern Junior Club Cricket Association strives to be an organisation of integrity providing competitive cricket at all levels to players from all sectors of our community in a professional and organised manner, developing cricketing skills, enhancing social integration and cultural understanding of all those participating or involved under its administration,” explained Kingham.

“We are therefore extremely proud of how the EJCCA Carnival City Cricket Festival has grown over the years.”

Group matches take place throughout the week, with the main matches taking place at all the venues on Saturday and the T20 finals being played at Willowmoore, the headquarters of Eastern Cricket, on Sunday.

Like Marco Polo centuries ago, three young Ekurhuleni women undertook epic journeys of the world and arrived back brimming over with tales of wonder to tell at a celebration thrown in their honour by Carnival City and the Afrisun East Rand Community Trust (AERCT) on 2 July.

In 2008 the AERCT awarded 10 local girls with a two-year bursary in Somatology (Beauty Therapy) and Hairdressing. Little could anyone have known at that time that the course of their lives would change so much and the world would become their Oyster.

After graduating Nokathula ‘Thuli’ Tshabangu from Kwa Thema, Nombuso Mncube from Tsakane and Duduzile Ngwenya from Brakpan were offered the opportunity to work for the leading global spa brand Steiner aboard their international cruise ships. For all three girls the experience expanded their minds and opened their eyes to new worlds, new cultures and new possibilities.

Duduzile, who toured the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Caribbean, Key West, Jacksonville and Croatia, “We worked closely with people from all over the world. I learnt so much about other cultures and food. The hours were long but the experience is one I will never forget and no one can remove it from my mind.” She is not certain about her future plans but hopes to have her own beauty spa which she would like to use to “pay back” to young, orphaned women.

For Nombuso the time away taught her about many things she had never before considered such as time zones, weather conditions, dress codes, food and different cultures. She has visited Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Malta, Greece, Miami, Florida, Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Turk and Cayman Islands, St Thomas, St Martin, St Croix, Puerto Rico and the Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas. “I learnt that when you work with people you have to be patient, humble, respectful and trustworthy and it’s not just about rendering a service but also about building a relationship with your clients.” Nombuso intends returning to the ships and plans to save the money she makes there to open her own business in the future.

For Thuli, her nine-month adventure took her to Hawaii, Turkey, Greece, France, Brazil, China, India, Vietnam, America, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Dubai, Israel, Egypt, Croatia, Barcelona, Costa Rica, Colombia, the Amazon and Singapore. She said of her trip “I would like to thank the Afrisun Trust and Carnival City for the wonderful experience they gave me. I would never have been able to afford to go to any of these places on my own. All the countries I visited are special and beautiful in their own way. I learnt a lot about people’s cultures, food and lifestyles. I also made sure I ate in every country and this is visible by my weight gain and the comments from all at home!

“The experience has changed me in a good way. I have matured and now understand and appreciate where I come from. I have learnt how to communicate with people, the way you should stand, speak and address people. I also learnt you should always take your job seriously.”

Thuli has just learnt that from July she will be working aboard a bigger ship, the six-star Crystal Cruise.

NOTE:

The course, internationally accredited by City and Guilds in London, was run by the Rene Institute of Beauty Therapy in Brakpan.

Police honoured at Carnival City-Afrisun Trust’s SAPs 2011 Merit Awards
Special award for policemen who arrested the Facebook Rapist

Among the SAPs personnel honoured at the Carnival City and Afrisun Trust’s 2011 SAPs Awards dinner on Tuesday 27 March was the late Constable Bongani Dhlamini who, together with Seargeant Maurice Moloi, was instrumental in the capture of the notorious Facebook rapist.

Representatives from each Ekurhuleni police station packed the Carnival City Big Top Arena to enthusiastically applaud each nominee and the winners were invited up onto the stage to collect their awards from the trustees of the Afrisun Trust.

The four nominees in each of the nine contested categories included permanent SAPS members, civilians, reservists, volunteers and community police forum members from throughout the Ekurhuleni district. The Awards attracted 170 entries this year.

Constable Dhlamini and Sergeant Moloi from Brackendowns SAPs were both nominated for Top Cop for the role they played in apprehending the man dubbed the Facebook rapist. He taunted police for months before he was finally arrested in Alberton in October last year. He is currently in prison on several charges of kidnap and rape and one of murder. Constable Dhlamini sadly passed away on the 5th March, however his memory was honoured with a special merit award presented to him posthumously. Sergeant Moloi was similarly awarded.

Best Visible Police Member and Top Cop

The award for Best Visible Police Member as well as Top Cop went to Constable FULL NAME Pillay from the North East Rand Dog Unit. Constable Pillay’s zealous and determined efforts to rid the area of the scourge of drugs and drug dealers earned him this honour. During 2011 he variously assisted would-be suicide victims, closed down illegal shebeens and taverns, apprehended shoplifters and murders, solved four cases of cable theft amounting to over R30 000 and arrested a number of drug dealers in possession of cat, rock, dagga and cocaine.

Best reservist Actonville Cst A.M. Latif

Actonville Constable NAME Latif was named the Best Reservist for outstanding work in the community and for his involvement in the arrest of criminals for TRI CRIMES, murder, ATM-bombings and police killings. Together with his team he successfully tracked down a murder suspect to Ladysmith where he was apprehended in connection with the murder of a local 16-year old boy. Latif also tracked down and arrested the suspect who shot and killed his partner, recovering the firearm too.

Best Volunteer

Oupla Thobejane from Vosloorus was named Best Volunteer. He has actively encouraged people to join local community patrols, assisted in 63 arrests covering common assault, armed robbery, drug dealing, domestic violence and rape. He helped to place 11 abused women in places of safety, even using his own home for this purpose. He also initiated a Stop Xenophobia Group.

Best Community Police Forum

Mr Selvan Naidoo, Chairperson of the Actonville-Wattville Community Police Forum accepted the Best Community Police Forum Award on behalf of them. Since being set up, SAPs has noted a dramatic drop in crime in the area and the Forum has been commended for its hard work, good organisation and dedication to the task. And the proof lies in the positive feedback received from the community.

Best Crime and or Communication Member

Captain NAME Maome from Primrose was named Best Crime and/or Communication Member. He started a relief program to help victims of fires after their shacks are burnt down, built up relationships with stakeholders who assist with feeding and building materials whenever a natural disaster occurs and oversees the delivery of food parcels and blankets for all the victims, young and old. Toys and clothes for the less fortunate children are also distributed in the settlements. The Captain was particularly applauded for his engagement with communities and the time and effort he puts into teaching youngsters about the dangers of drugs and other social crimes and working closely with the patrollers in this regard.

Best Detective

Detective Warrant Office NAME Seema from Boksburg North walked off with the Award for Best Detective. This year his convictions include robbery, rape, murder and fraud. He relieved the residents of Impala Park from criminals, who terrorised them at night, he recovered stolen goods, and apprehended the suspects in the fatal shooting of a motorist at a local petrol station where he was filling up with fuel. The suspects are currently on trial.

Best Support Service Member and/or Civilian

Brakpan Administration Clerk Shaun Hansen received the Award for Best Support Service Member and/or Civilian. In addition to performing his own duties diligently, Hansen has unselfishly given up his own time to give members of the team computer training and is always available to assist with the computers or scanner. He does all this after hours, over weekends and on public holidays. He has also conducted one-on-one sessions with staff members to build morale and identify challenges they’re having.

Best Team – Tembisa Detectives – Five members

And for dedication to duty, five detectives from Tembisa were named the Best Team. Working closely with informants, and despite having just finished a long shift, the team were tipped off about a high-jacking syndicate. They immediately returned to work and with meticulous planning briefed back up and secured the area, blocking off all escape routes. After observing the area in plain clothes they waited until they had arrested five heavily armed suspects who exchanged fire until they were overpowered. The suspects, all from Limpopo, are currently in court on charges of robbery, stolen fire arms and high-jacking.

Entertainment – lead singer of La Vuvuzela, Tarryn Lamb and Hip hop artist “Skillz” with the main event P J Powers

Entertainment at the Award evening was provided by songstress Tarryn Lamb, lead singer of La Vuvuzela, popular hip hop performer ‘Skillz’ and Penelope Jane Dunlop, better known to her legion of fans as the legendary PJ Powers.
