The Afrisun SAP Merit Awards Winners 2010

SAP AwardsThe Afrisun East Rand Community Trust has recognised the men and women of Ekurhuleni SAPS who have performed beyond the call of duty. A gala dinner to celebrate this was held at Carnival City on Thursday, March 18.

The event, now in its sixth year, has candidates from Ekurhuleni police stations honoured in different categories: Best Detective, Best Vispol Member, Best Volunteer, Best Reservist, Best Social Crime Member, Best Support Member, Best Community Policing Forum, Best Team and the Top Cop for 2010.

The Merit Awards were previously held in the Rio Rooms at Carnival City, but an increase in entries and interest has resulted in a grand transition.
530 guests attended the award ceremony in the Big Top Arena, where live entertainment and special guests dined. The theme of this year’s awards “Human Rights”, focussing on our rights as community and Policing. In attendance was the MEC and MCC of Safety and Security, Police Commissioner Mpembe, Ekurhuleni and Executive Mayor Clr. Mekgwe.

“This year our entries have doubled; we are extremely proud to be part of such an event and to reward the men and women in uniform who put their own lives on the line to protect all in Ekurhuleni, These people make sure we sleep peacefully each night and they are the ones who will ensure that our visitors are safe and secure during the 2010 World Cup” commented Afrisun CEO Sandy Hattingh.

Best Detective Nominees for 2010

Captain De Filette – Vosloorus

The Winner – Captain De Filette – Vosloorus

During an investigation in the murder of a syndicate member, the investigation team had to interact with external role players. Captain De Filette from the Vosloorus detective branch held meetings and obtained information in respect of the syndicates’ modus operandi and on arrival at ORTIA a suspect was handed over by the immigration office to Captain De Filette.

He had evidence that positively linked the suspect to R68 million fraud. With further investigation and working with the Asset Forfeiture Unit and South African Revenue Services, Captain De Filette was successfull in uncovering fraudulent procedures by this organization to the values of:

R105 million SARS fraudulent claims
R21 million Insurance fraud
R700 million transferred to four different international banks.

Further investigation is still being conducted by Services Economical Crimes Unit in Pretoria

In September 2009, Supt Masethla was off duty when he received a call from Capt. Van der Walt, the complaint of a robbery at a local Spar, by 20 armed gang members, five shopped robbed and a member of the public shot dead. Supt Masethla and an officer responded following the suspects to N17, the suspects were shooting at the public in an attempt to highjack, the officers retaliated, manage to shoot two suspects, arrest one, recover three unlicenced fire arms, money to the value of R22 000.00, jewellery and personal belongings.
Commitment and dedication to their job and the community whilst off duty.

Mr. Oupa Thobejane, a volunteer in Vosloorus, patrols the area, has used his family home as a safe house on numerous occasions, assisted the community in developing their own patrol units in under developed areas, covering his own costs for transport to court to testify, the cost of his cell phone and other basic duties. He has been successfull with 40 cases of arrest ranging from theft, assault, house breaking to GBH and murder, with conviction in 8 cases.

A family man and very active member, part of the Crime Prevention Unit, Trio Task Team, Training sector and group leader.
He has been instrumental in recovering hijacked vehicles, disarming suspects and recovering 1 Million Rands’ worth of computer equipment, successful drug related raids, working into the early hours of the mornings and then going on to his day job.

Winner – Captain Minah Modise – Actonville SAPS

Captain Modise concentrates on awareness campaigns addressing the high rate of Assual, GBH and Murder in the area that alcohol related. This officer ensures that monthly meeting are held with shebeen and tavern owners, a forum has been established to address these issues, security guards have been put in place wearing reflector jackets to be visible policing. The launch of the youth desk was such a success that it was televised on SABC Pol Tv. A soccer and netball team as well as a patroller’s brass band has been established.

This forum is a team of dedicated individuals lead by Mr. Figlan, they have implemented:

To name a few of the community projects, they are also instrumental in the second hand goods dealers, the ministers, liquor and traders forum, working closely with the hostel residents and local bisness to prevent crime and create good relationships with the SAPS.

Winner – The Tekkie Team – Benoni

This team comprising of 8 members is based in Benoni, their no nonsense approach to crime has paid off in the success of car hijackings – drastically decreased, house breaking, armed robbery and the most dangerous car hijackers that were involved in a spade of motor vehicle hijackings in Benoni, Boksburg and Brakpan.
These members are highly motivated , working long hours without extra remunerations, in six days they managed 11 arrests, recovered 2 hijacked vehicles, 2 stolen vehicles, 1 unlicensed firearm and are a valuable asset to the Greater Benoni Cluster.

The Top Cop 2010

Captain De Filette – Vosloorus – Detectives
A dedicated man who went the extra mile in and beyond the line of duty to see justice served.

The eight categories had five nominees who each received a certificate of achievement, the winner in each category received a trophy, a certificate and a gift voucher from MC Ezra Ndandwe.
Live Entertainment by Dr. Rythm and Masoja Mzisa and the Soccer Crazy Crew was all part of the Gala Dinner and recognition ceremony.
